Satellite Collaring Barren Ground Caribou
Resource
A 2-page fact sheet from the Government of the Northwest Territories explaining the use of radio collars on caribou. Related herds: Beverly and Qamanirjuaq , Bathurst, Bluenose West, Bluenose East...
Seasonal Patterns in Nutritional Condition of Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in the Southern Northwest Territories and Northeastern British Columbia, Canada
Resource
Study sampled three measures of nutritional condition of adult female caribou, evaluated the effect of calf-rearing on condition and developed an annual profile of nutritional condition.
Setting a Foundation for Indigenous Knowledge Systems-guided Boreal Caribou (tǫdzı) Conservation Planning in the Western Boreal Region of Canada: A Systematic Map Protocol
Resource
Abstract In recent years, researchers have increasingly recognized the need to bridge Western and Indigenous knowledge systems to strengthen research in wildlife conservation. Historically, this arena...
Status of Porcupine Caribou and Barren-ground Caribou in the NWT
Resource
A lengthy NWT government Species at Risk assessment of barren-ground caribou and Porcupine caribou. It classifies the Porcupine caribou as “not at risk” in the NWT, and the other herds as “threatened”...
Summary of 2013 Tailings Technology Development and Commercialization Workshop
Resource
There is no single technology solution for tailings disposal – a suite of technologies will be required For a technology to be considered suitable it must provide net environmental benefits
Summary of Resiliency of Reclaimed Boreal Forest Landscapes Seminar
Resource
For reclaimed lands to be considered self-sustaining they should respond to natural and anthropogenic disturbances in a similar manner to how an analogous undisturbed landscape might respond
Summary of the Oil Sands Groundwater – Surface Water Interactions Workshop
Resource
Develop common understanding of the current knowledge regarding groundwater resources, groundwater-surface water interactions in the oil sands area, ongoing applied research, monitoring and impacts
Survey of Albertans’ Value Drivers Regarding Oil Sands Development and Reclamation
Resource
A random sample of 1,032 Albertans to gather empirical information as a basis for oil sands policy development for both industry and government
Survey of Oil Sands Environmental Management Research and Information Needs
Resource
Survey demonstrated need to better communicate availability of existing information and continue to make efforts to provide easy, timely and transparent access to monitoring and research information
Synthesis of Toxicological Behavior of Oil Sands Process-Affected Water Constituents
Resource
Review of the adverse effects of individual compounds, or mixtures of compounds, that are present in oil sands process-affected water and/or other oil-related sources.
Tactical Departures and Strategic Arrivals: Divergent Effects of Climate and Weather on Caribou Spring Migrations
Resource
A 2019 academic paper that looks at factors affecting caribou migration timing and speed. The paper concludes that later arrival at calving grounds might indicate that females are in worse condition...
The Alberta Oil Sands, Journalists, and Their Sources
Resource
A clear majority of journalists said that there are many stories about the oil sands that go unreported and many of these unreported stories have to do with environmental issues
The Alberta Oil Sands Then and Now: An Investigation of the Economic, Environmental and Social Discourses Across Four Decades
Resource
In the last 10 to 15 years, global issues such as climate change, indigenous rights, pollution of the air and major waterways, and sustainability have become embedded in the oil sands discourse
The Direct and Habitat-mediated Influence of Climate on the Biogeography of Boreal Caribou in Canada
Resource
Effective species conservation efforts require insight into whether a species’ extent of occurrence may shift due to changing climate, habitat loss, or both. The extent of occurrence of the threatened...
The Importance of Continuous Dialogue in Community-Based Wildlife Monitoring: Case Studies of Dzan and łuk Dagaii in the Gwich’in Settlement Area
Resource
Rapid environmental change in the Arctic elicits numerous concerns for ecosystems, natural resources, and ways of life. Robust monitoring is essential to adaptation and management in light of these...
The Multisource Vegetation Inventory (MVI): A Satellite-Based Forest Inventory for the Northwest Territories Taiga Plains
Resource
Wall-to-wall 30 m raster maps of broad forest type, stand height, crown closure, stand volume, total volume, aboveground biomass, and stand age were created for a ~400,000 km2 area, validated with independent data, and generalized into a polygon GIS layer resembling a traditional FI map. The MVI project showed that a reasonably accurate FI map for large, remote, predominantly non-inventoried boreal regions can be obtained at a low cost by combining limited field data with remote sensing data from multiple sources.
The OSRIN Story: Five Years of Creating and Sharing Oil Sands Environmental Management Knowledge
Resource
Mandates: 1. Creating oil sands environmental management knowledge, 2. Sharing oil sands environmental management information, and 3. Networking to link researchers with funders and other researchers
