Recovery Strategy for Barren-Ground Caribou in the Northwest Territories
Resource
This 70-page recovery strategy for barren-gound caribou in the Northwest Territories lays out plans to help the eight herds covered by the strategy. The strategy was required by the NWT Species at...
Recovery Strategy for the Boreal Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in the Northwest Territories
Resource
The purpose of this recovery strategy is to provide an action-oriented planning tool that identifies how the conservation and recovery of boreal caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou, woodland caribou...
Satellite Collaring Barren Ground Caribou
Resource
A 2-page fact sheet from the Government of the Northwest Territories explaining the use of radio collars on caribou. Related herds: Beverly and Qamanirjuaq , Bathurst, Bluenose West, Bluenose East...
Seasonal Patterns in Nutritional Condition of Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in the Southern Northwest Territories and Northeastern British Columbia, Canada
Resource
Study sampled three measures of nutritional condition of adult female caribou, evaluated the effect of calf-rearing on condition and developed an annual profile of nutritional condition.
Setting a Foundation for Indigenous Knowledge Systems-guided Boreal Caribou (tǫdzı) Conservation Planning in the Western Boreal Region of Canada: A Systematic Map Protocol
Resource
Abstract In recent years, researchers have increasingly recognized the need to bridge Western and Indigenous knowledge systems to strengthen research in wildlife conservation. Historically, this arena...
Spatial Differences in Genetic Diversity and Northward Migration Suggest Genetic Erosion Along the Boreal Caribou Southern Range Limit and Continued Range Retraction
Resource
Study assesses changes in genetic diversity and connectivity in areas of high and low anthropogenic activity, across threatened boreal caribou populations in Ontario and Manitoba.
Spatial Familial Networks to Infer Demographic Structure of Wild Populations
Resource
Abstract In social species, reproductive success and rates of dispersal vary among individuals resulting in spatially structured populations. Network analyses of familial relationships may provide...
Status of Porcupine Caribou and Barren-ground Caribou in the NWT
Resource
A lengthy NWT government Species at Risk assessment of barren-ground caribou and Porcupine caribou. It classifies the Porcupine caribou as “not at risk” in the NWT, and the other herds as “threatened”...
Tactical Departures and Strategic Arrivals: Divergent Effects of Climate and Weather on Caribou Spring Migrations
Resource
A 2019 academic paper that looks at factors affecting caribou migration timing and speed. The paper concludes that later arrival at calving grounds might indicate that females are in worse condition...
The Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) Genome
Resource
Paper outlines the sequencing of the genome from a male boreal caribou from Manitoba, Canada.
The Direct and Habitat-mediated Influence of Climate on the Biogeography of Boreal Caribou in Canada
Resource
Effective species conservation efforts require insight into whether a species’ extent of occurrence may shift due to changing climate, habitat loss, or both. The extent of occurrence of the threatened...
The Multisource Vegetation Inventory (MVI): A Satellite-Based Forest Inventory for the Northwest Territories Taiga Plains
Resource
Wall-to-wall 30 m raster maps of broad forest type, stand height, crown closure, stand volume, total volume, aboveground biomass, and stand age were created for a ~400,000 km2 area, validated with independent data, and generalized into a polygon GIS layer resembling a traditional FI map. The MVI project showed that a reasonably accurate FI map for large, remote, predominantly non-inventoried boreal regions can be obtained at a low cost by combining limited field data with remote sensing data from multiple sources.
The Role of Introgression and Ecotypic Parallelism in Delineating Intraspecific Conservation Units
Resource
Abstract: Parallel evolution can occur through selection on novel mutations, standing genetic variation or adaptive introgression. Uncovering parallelism and introgressed populations can complicate...
“These Trees Have Stories to Tell”: Linking Dënesǫ́łıné Oral History of Caribou Use with Trample Scar Frequency on Black Spruce Roots at Ɂedacho Kué
Resource
This paper describes linkages between knowledge derived from Dënesǫ́łıné oral history and quantitative dendroecological analysis of trample scars on black spruce ( Picea mariana) root samples...
Theses - Trent University
Project
Organization:
Graduate student theses produced at Trent University.
Trophic Consequences of Terrestrial Eutrophication for a Threatened Ungulate
Resource
Conservation actions directed at the proximate cause of caribou decline have been more successful in the near term than those directed further along the trophic chain.
Video - Barren-ground Caribou Surveys - English
Resource
A 1':25" 2018 video with subtitles from the Government of the Northwest Territories showing and explaining the aerial surveys of barren-ground caribou in 2018. Related Herds: Bathurst, Bluenose East...
