Shepherdia canadensis or Canada Buffaloberry is a widespread shrub in boreal forests. This shrub produces berries during the summer months that is a key habitat food source for wildlife, in addition to being a traditional food source of certain Indigenous groups. This species is also widely used in reclamation as a nitrogen-fixing species that can establish well in early successional forests and a variety of soil types.
This technical guide outlines the identification of Shepherdia canadensis and the process of seed collection, extraction, cleaning and storage currently used by the NAIT Centre for Boreal Research.
