Problems associated with soil degradation have, in some parts of Canada, reached crisis proportions. Combatting these problems is a complex task involving the consideration of social, economic, and technical factors.
Farmers generally oppose mandatory implementation of conservation measures, favouring voluntary and mutual implementation policies. Soil conservation programs are primarily voluntary in nature. American conservation programs have been ineffective, with cost~sharing assistance used on lands with only minor degradation problems.
Future programs in Alberta should be targetted to achieve the greatest return for scarce conservation dollars. Farmers and local governments are urged to seek local solutions to degradation problems and the non-farming community invited to become more educated in the complex issues surrounding soil degradation.
