Nutrient losses from farmland to the environment have become a worldwide concern. Best management practices need to be developed and implemented to curtail the impact on ecological sustainability. I will highlight my over 30 years of experience in the basic and advanced strategies to improve nutrient use efficiency and farming profits while minimizing the impact of agriculture on the environment. Traditional soil testing is still an effective approach to managing phosphorus and potassium; however, the newly developed sensor-based technology is superior to the crop yield-based nitrogen management strategy. Easy-to-use computer programs can enable farmers to make more informed decisions. AI and machine-learning will offer new opportunities for better nutrient management in the future.
