The 2016 conference for the Alberta Institute of Agrolgists was held in April in Banff. This year's conference theme was "Land and People". The Land Use Knowledge Network recorded presentations from the conference.

Doug Eyford, Q.C., EMSP LLP Lawyers, has broad experience in B.C on providing strategic business and legal advice to First Nations, the Crown and industry about transportation and resource development projects.

Doug Eyford speaks to the changing climate among First Nations and governments in Canada. He discusses Canada`s proposed National Reconciliation Framework., and he raises his concerns about Canada`s emphasis on the UN`s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He discusses the consequences of committing to implement the Declaration. The evolutionary development of people in relation to land and the implications for land rights are at the core of disagreements among indigenous peoples  and government. Free, prior, informed consent is a point of debate. The Declaration may not involve the same balancing of interests that is involved in Canadian law. Prince Rupert is a case study.

This presentation was part of the Alberta Institute of Agrologists conference held in April 2016.
